At the next session of Mind Readings, our project seminar, we will discuss an upcoming paper by Michelle Liu (Herts), entitled "Qualities and the Galilean Intuition". The seminar is scheduled for Monday, February 1, 2021, 11 a.m. and will take place on Zoom.
The paper is a commentary piece on Philip Goff's recent book Galileo's Error (2019).
Abstract:
It is often thought that sensible qualities such as colours do not exist as properties of physical objects, an idea known as the ‘Galilean intuition’ (Boghossian and Velleman 1989). This paper focuses on the case of colour. Against supporters of the Galilean intuition, it argues that we should not eliminate colours from the world, and appeals especially to theorists who, like Philip Goff, are already convinced that the quantitative language of physical science fails to capture all qualities.
Dr. Liu will be present at the read-ahead seminar.
The seminar is open to all, but newcomers should e-mail j.mihalik@herts.ac.uk for the Zoom link and the paper.
